Sweden’s first international casino, Casino Cosmopol in Sundsvall, has been shut down following a decade long struggle to attain break even. There has been a steady decline of the number of visitors in the last decade or so.
At present, there are not enough customers to sustain the business and the board of Svenska Spel has ordered the closure of the casino. There are 68 employees in the facility at the time of closure.
“It is a sad message to have to give to our talented employees, but we must adapt to prevailing market conditions. With a constantly declining customer base, the casino in Sundsvall is no longer profitable and then it is unfortunately not commercially defensible to continue to run the business,” said Patrik Hofbauer, president and CEO of Svenska Spel.
